Below is a categorised list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding the overall use of Reptiles Down Under (RDU), including ad and account related topics for your convenience.

Please take some time to review some of the questions & answers provided here and simply click on the question to reveal the answer.

General Use

Double-posting Ads

Double-posting ads, or posting duplicate ads via various accounts is simply not allowed; as it is not fair for the rest of the users on RDU.

Hint: If you suspect someone has been posting duplicate ads, please use the red “Report” button to alert the RDU staff. To learn more about reporting ads, please read the FAQ below.

Reporting an Ad

Whilst we do our best to stay on top of eliminating suspicious ads and users, unfortunately some do fall through the cracks. In saying that, RDU relies heavily on its users/visitors to report suspicious ads and content; this way we can ensure our website stays safe and fair for everyone.

If you believe an ad looks like a scam or, contains offensive language and/or abusive content etc. then please report it as soon as possible. By reporting suspicious ads, our staff is able to locate them quicker, which in turn allows us to take action as soon as possible.

To report an ad, simply click on the red “ Report” button located on the right hand side of every ad page above the contact form (see image below). Once clicked, a form will pop up which you will need to complete accordingly, then click the “Submit Report” button. Our staff will then review your report details and act accordingly.

Does RDU use maps?

Yes, we use Google maps on single ad pages. However, to ensure the safety of our users and reduce the risk of theft, RDU only uses your city and state to give the viewer an idea of your location.

Hint: We do not ask for and/or use street addresses, meaning we cannot pin-point an advertisers location.

I have been defrauded. What do I do?

If you feel that you have been the victim of fraud, please contact us via our contact page ensuring that you provide as much information as possible about your situation, including their name, username, email address and ad URL/link + Ad ID number (if applicable).

We also recommend that you lodge a formal report with your local police department to begin an investigation.

Hint: Whilst we are unable to pursue the person in question ourselves, we are happy to assist you and the police in any way that we can. We also ban their account to protect other RDU users from falling victim.

How do I report a violation of my intellectual property?

If you believe an ad on RDU is in violation of your intellectual property (such as unauthorised use of images), please contact us via our contact page ensuring that you provide as much information as possible about your situation, including their name, username, email address and ad URL/link + Ad ID number (if applicable) so that we can investigate the matter further.

After we receive your enquiry, one of our staff will review the details + ad in question and be in contact with you thereafter.

Does RDU have phone support?

Sorry, but we do not have phone support. However, our staff can be contacted via the contact page to express any issues you may have.

Hint: Our staff are usually quick to respond to any/all issues. However, we ask that you please allow up to 48 hours for a response.

Posting an Ad

Do I have to register to post an Ad?

Yes, you must be a registered member in order to be able to post any ads on RDU.

How do I post an Ad?

Posting an ad is very simple and completely free. Simply log in using the form located at the top right-hand side of the page (image below) and enter your email address and password. Alternatively, you can also log in here.

Once you are logged in, click on the ‘Post Ad’ button (image below) to begin creating your ad. You will first need to select the category and sub-category that best describes what you are looking to advertise.

Example – Selling a Python:

Select “Pythons” as your category from the first drop-down list, then you select “For Sale” in the second drop-down list. Now just click the “Go” button and begin entering all the details of your ad. Please complete all of the fields, such as; Location, Common Name, Scientific Name, Sex etc. and try to use images wherever possible.

Hint: The second drop-down list only appears once you have selected a category from the first list as the sub-categories vary depending on what category you choose.

How much does it cost to post an Ad?

Absolutely nothing! Posting ads on RDU is completely free for all users.

Hint: We do offer ad promotions options, such as “Featured Ads” which cost $10.00 AUD per ad and last 7 days.

Can I include images in my Ad?

Yes, you are able to add up to ten (10) images per ad.

There is a 2MB size limit per image for each individual ad posted. Please note, that the larger the image file size the longer it will take to upload when posting an ad. So we recommend that you please re-size your images prior to uploading them.

Hint: Use an image editing software (such as Paint.NET or Adobe Photoshop) to re-size your images in order to optimize them for use on our website.

What do the different ‘Price Types’ mean?

When posting a for sale ad, you will be asked to select a ‘Price Type’ after entering a price amount for the item(s) you are listing. Below is the list of the ‘Price Type’ options available and what they mean:

General Price Types

  • each – cost per item listed
  • total – cost for all items listed
  • fromstarting cost of items listed
  • the lot – cost for the lotall items listed
  • neg – cost for item(s) is negotiable [short for Negotiable]
  • ono – will consider offers [short for Or Near Offer]
  • firm – cost for item(s) is non-negotiable
  • or swap – will also consider trades
  • free – all ad items are free
  • EOI – open to offers [short for Expressions of Interest]

Reptile Livestock Price Types

  • pair – cost for the pair
  • trio – cost for the trio
  • clutch pair – cost for the clutch pair

Service Price Types

  • per hour – cost per hour for offerd service
  • per day – cost per day for offerd service

“Unsupported HTML” error when posting?

For security reasons, RDU does not allow HTML content in ads, as some HTML and/or Javascript functions can be used for malicious purposes.

So to ensure the safety of our visitors, we do not allow the use of HTML content when posting ads.

Hint: This error can also occur if you copy + paste your ad content in from another program. If this is the case, please paste your ad content into a simple text program first such as Notepad as this will remove all formatting.

Are Ads screened before they appear?

No, they are not. Due to the high volume of ads that are posted regularly, we do not screen any ads before they appear on RDU.

As a result, we rely on our users/visitors to report suspicious ads by clicking the red “ Report” button located on the right hand side of every ad page above the contact form (see image below) to help the RDU staff find and remove any unwanted ads.

User Feedback

All about Feedback

RDU uses a “User Feedback” system which allows our (registered) members to leave feedback outlining their experience(s) with the other advertisers on RDU.

Your feedback score represents your reputation as an RDU user, and is made up of scores and comments left by other members who you have had dealings with.

Hint: Both registered and unregistered users/visitors are able to view feedback scores.

How do I leave Feedback?

To provide user feedback, simply visit the advertisers profile page by clicking on their username located on the right hand side of every ad page in the contact form (see image below).

Once you are directed to their profile page, click on the “Leave Feedback” button and a form will appear with 5 stars used for rating, and a text box so that you can provide a brief comment relating to your experience.

Hint: Even though it is voluntary, we encourage all of our users to leave feedback after a transaction – good and bad. As this will in turn help future dealings with the advertiser.

How is Feedback scored?

Each time you provide feedback, you must choose a rating between 1 and 5 stars (1 being the lowest) relating to your experience.

Hint: Each star rating is equal to 20% – e.g. 2 stars = 40% and 5 stars = 100%. This score is then averaged each and every time the user receives feedback.

I have been left with unfair Feedback. What do I do?

If you believe the feedback left by another user is unfair or irrelevant (such as a personal attack), then please contact us ensuring you provide the name of the user that left the feedback in question, as well as the comment(s) left. One of the RDU staff will then review the feedback and take necessary action.

Hint: When providing user feedback, we ask that you please leave all personal and/or private matters out of your comment(s). Please ensure that you leave truthful feedback regarding the transaction(s) that occurred between you and the advertiser in question only.

Searching & Replying to Ads

Using the Search Bar

The search bar appears below the menu on every page and picks up on all keywords that you enter for maximum search results.

Hint: You can also select a specific category (or sub-category) to perform your search in which will help narrow down your search results.

How can I filter search results?

On the right-hand side of every sub-category page, there is a ‘Refine Results’ box. Here you are able to refine the ads shown by various options to better suit what you are looking for, such as:

  • City
  • Price
  • Location/State
  • Scientific Name (Reptiles only)
  • Sex (Reptiles only)
  • Condition (Art, Books and Accessories only)
  • Brand (Accessories only)

How do I reply to an Ad?

To reply to an ad of interest, simply complete the “Contact Advertiser” form located on the right hand side of the page beside every ad (see image below); ensuring you fill out the all the fields correctly. Once you are done, click the “Send Enquiry” button.

The ad poster will then receive an email with your reply and contact you at the email address you’ve entered.

Hint: If you are not a registered user, please ensure you type in your email address correctly in the “Email” field so the poster of the ad can respond to your enquiry without issue.

How do I open an Ad in a new tab or window?

When you’re browsing the categories and see several different ads that you want to check out, it is much easier to open each of these in their own tab or window as opposed to clicking on an ad and loading the information in the same page, and then having to go back a page to the search results page to find the next ad. You can use the following methods to open ads in their own tabs or windows:

  • Right-click on the Title of the Ad with your mouse and select the “Open in New Tab” or “Open in New Window” option
  • Hold the CTRL (Command on Mac) key on your keyboard and click on the title of the ad. The ad should then open in its own tab or window which you can select on your browser’s tool bar

Ad & Account Management

I forgot my password. Can you reset it?

In the event that you have forgotten or lost your password, you are able to request a new one yourself by clicking on the Lost password? link located at the top of the page below the log in fields – see image below:

You will then need to enter the Username or Email associated with your account and a new/temporary password will be sent to you.

If you do not receive an email within 30 minutes, please contact us via our contact page and one of our staff will assist you further.

Hint: We recommend you change your newly issued password upon logging in.

How do I change my email address?

You may change/edit your email address via My Dashboard -> Edit Profile.

Enter a new email address, or edit your existing one then click on the “Update Profile” button to save the changes.

Hint: Please ensure you use an updated, valid email address as this will be the primary point-of-contact for any potential buyers/sellers needing to contact you.

How do I change my password?

You may change/edit your password at any time via My Dashboard -> Edit Profile.

Enter your new password (twice) then click on the “Update Profile” button to save the changes.

Hint: We recommend you update your password frequently as a security measure.

What do I do after my Ad is sold or has expired?

Once the item(s) in your ad has been sold, please delete it via your My Dashboard.

Alternatively, if your ad has expired (usually done automatically after 60 days), then please delete it via your My Dashboard and re-list it by re-submitting a new ad.

Can I pause my Ad?

Yes, you can pause your ad at any time via My Dashboard by clicking (once) on the pause icon located under the ‘Options’ field beside your ad – see image below:

Hint: You may want to use this feature while you deal with potential buyers as this will pause your expiry time as well.

How do I delete my Ad?

To delete your ad, simply go to My Dashboard and click (once) on the X located under the ‘Options’ field beside your ad – see image below:

Featured Ads

What are Featured Ads?

Featured Ads are highlighted listings on RDU that appear above top of standard ad listings.

What are the benefits Featured Ads?

Featured Ads tend to receive more views and replies than standard listings, due to the fact that they stand out from standard listings. This helps you get more exposure for your listing.

Can I create a Featured Ad?

Yes. All member’s have the opportunity to make their listing a Featured Ad by choosing the “Featured Ad?” option during the ad posting process for a small fee.

How long do Featured Ads last?

Your listing will appear as a Featured Ad for a maximum of seven (7) days.

What pages will my Featured Ad appear on?

Featured Ads appear above standard listings on the home page, as well as in the category and sub-category they have been posted in.

How many Featured Ads are displayed?

Up to three (3) Featured Ads appear at any given time. To expose them to as many RDU visitor’s as possible, Featured Ads appear in a random order, displaying a different set of ads on each new page load and/or refresh.

Do Featured Ads appear right after payment?

No, your payment must first be confirmed by an admin before your Featured Ad is approved and displayed on RDU.
